According to the photographer Randal Ford, “every animal has a story to tell“.  This compelling thought is the crux of his Animal Portrait Collection, an overwhelming series of portraits that deals with his subjects’ defining personalities and behaviors.

Each one of the revealing photo deals an individual animal categorically shot against a stark black or white backdrop for a perfect definition of it. As explained by Ford as a “deconstructive approach to portraiture,” this minimalist prospect moves us to investigate the subjects beyond oddities of distraction and centers around core emotions.

This core of the subject being feelings is also obviously visible in the manifested portrayal of these animals. For instance the examples could be seen in the portraits of “the upside-down sloth and lounging chimpanzee that bring out their silly nature, while others the likes of black bull and Bengal tiger could be seen wielding greater strength and power. Either way, “whether it’s beauty, power, or humor,” Ford explains, “I want to give animals the opportunity to tell their story and to connect with you.”

“During the shooting process, it’s not uncommon that an animal gives you just a glimpse of its personality. My need to stay on point and focused is imperative in capturing that split second when an animal reveals itself,” he says. “And of course, these are animals.  We love them, we respect them, but we cannot control them.  It’s up to them to decide the story being told.”

For achieving his chief objective Ford has adopted an envious approach, he would not do anything to motivate animals to perform certain poses or acts rather lets them have their own prime nature revealed before the camera and has his shots right when the time is right and for that he waits.
